SaimaaHoliday wins the “Rising destination for aquatic tourism” competition

SaimaaHoliday has been selected as the winner of EDEN 2010 Finland competition for rising aquatic tourism destinations that offer versatile services throughout the year. The competition is a part of the European Commission’s European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) competition and it was held for the fourth time.

SaimaaHoliday considers winning the competition as recognition for its long term development of travel products and services. Further, it is a proof of excellent cooperation between small entrepreneurs. The award is also a triumph for the Lake Saimaa and Savonlinna region travel industry as well as to all the customers who have fallen in love with the area.

The secret to the success of SaimaaHoliday is the variable ways of utilising Linnansaari and Kolovesi aquatic national parks all year round. SaimaaHoliday offers travel products in tour skating, fishing, nature watching, paddling and boating. The nature experiences are supported by high quality cottage and hotel accommodation and restaurant and sauna services.

A total of 25 EU countries took part in this year’s competition and one destination from each country was awarded. Awards will be presented in the European Tourism Forum in Brussels in September. The SaimaaHoliday team will attend the Forum to promote Lake Saimaa and the seal friendly nature travel products.

Seal watching at the national park!

The best season to see the famous Saimaa seal (ringed seal) is in May – June.

We organize guided tours to small groups (2- 16 persons) to the Linnansaari National park. The aim of these trips is to watch the endangered Saimaa seal. We will take a small boat to the National park islands and our guides will navigate to the most favourable places for seal watching. We don’t want to disturb the seals, and therefore we’ll only watch them with binoculars from distance. On the first early spring tours you can spot a seal resting on an ice float or a rock. If you camera has a lens strong enough, you could get a photo of a life time of Mr or Mrs Seal “waving” its fin to you. On a seal watching trip you can also spot one of the biggest and finest raptorial birds in Finland, Fisk hawk.
